The Virtues of Fruits

InterviewsJul 9, 2025

They burst with color in the orchards, brimming with sunlight and sweetness. Apples, pears, figs, grapes, red berries, and tropical fruits, each carries a fragile balance between gentleness and vitality. Since ancient times, they have nourished, strengthened, and comforted. Yet beyond their nutritive value, they hold a powerful symbolism: fertility, abundance, and immediate pleasure.

The apple, perhaps the most universal of all, appears in both founding myths and everyday gestures. It represents temptation as much as health. Biting into a fresh apple is a simple, almost ritual act - a reminder of the strength of raw nourishment. Its richness in fiber and antioxidants confirms what tradition long intuited: it supports the body with steadiness and constancy.

The pear, tender and yielding, embodies sweetness and generosity. Its soft texture makes it a comforting fruit, linked to abundance and sensuality. Its mineral-rich water refreshes and hydrates. In several cultures, the pear symbolizes longevity and prosperity.

The fig, fleshy and honeyed, has fascinated since Antiquity. Its shape and texture made it a symbol of fertility and desire. Rich in fiber and minerals, it brings energy and vitality. When dried, it concentrates its sweetness - a companion for journeys and long walks, proof of its nourishing and protective nature.

The grape, with its translucent clusters, gathers light into tiny pearls. Eaten fresh, it hydrates and restores; fermented, it has inspired millennia-old traditions around wine and conviviality. Rich in antioxidants, it evokes vitality and renewal. Each cluster embodies both unity and multiplicity — the abundance of a whole composed of shining fragments.

Red fruits, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, add a note of intensity. Their vivid color instantly draws the eye. Rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, they support the immune system and provide quick energy. Symbolically, they evoke the fleeting, the brief season of their ripening, yet also the intensity condensed in a single moment.

Tropical fruits, mango, pineapple, papaya, bring a more exotic generosity. Their sweet, fragrant flesh embodies celebration, warmth, and joy. Long valued as natural tonics, they aid digestion, boost energy, and revive the body after heavy heat.

All these fruits share a common virtue: they embody immediate vitality. Their enjoyment is instinctive, a pleasure of biting, tasting, hydrating. Unlike spices or woods, they do not unfold over time; they exist in the moment, as a sensory spark.

Modern science merely confirms what tradition long sensed: fruits overflow with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that strengthen immunity, slow cellular aging, and sustain the body through daily effort.

They remind us of a simple wisdom, that of nature offered freely, immediate and accessible. To bite into a fruit is to rediscover a primal joy: one that needs no artifice, no preparation. Fruits are an invitation to savor the present moment, to find in their sweet, colorful flesh a promise of vitality and delight.
